Welcome to the Maine Schutzhund Club

We are dedicated to protecting and preserving the German Shepherd Dog's working heritage protectionthrough Schutzhund training. Schutzhund is a sport that focuses on developing and evaluating those traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners. The purpose of Schutzhund is to demonstrate the dog's intelligence and utility. It also measures the dog's mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability. This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog and compete with each other for recognition of both the handler's ability to train and the dog's ability to perform as required. It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages and conditions of life including those with significant disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport. Often, it is a family sport

What is Schutzhund?

Schutzhund is a competitive dog sport where dog/handler teams compete and are evaluated in the areas of tracking, obedience and protection work.

The sport originated in Germany where it was initially a test of temperament and working ability and used primarily as an evaluation of breed worthiness for German Shepherd Dogs.

Over the years the sport has grown into a world-wide highly competitive endeavor wprotection2here big events can draw over a hundred dog/handler teams and thousands of spectators.

In addition to serious full time competitors, and the big national and international events, there are many smaller Schutzhund Clubs that train and hold trials where their members are able to compete and earn titles. Most of these clubs are affiliated with either Schutzhund USA, DVG America or Working Dogs of America.

Although the sport has its origins with the German Shepherd Dog, many other breeds compete and benefit from Schutzhund training. Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Belgium Shepherds, American Bulldogs, Boxers, Bouviers and other working breeds excel in Schutzhund competition.
